Dumirox - Fluvoxamine maleate is prescribed for obsessive-compulsive disorder. Fluvoxamine is thought to work by increasing levels of serotonin, a brain chemical associated with mood and thinking. It belongs to a class of drugs known as selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which also includes antidepressants such as Paxil and Prozac.
You should not take this medication if you are allergic to fluvoxamine, or if you are also taking:
* alosetron (Lotronex);
* tizanidine (Zanaflex);
* thioridazine (Mellaril);
* pimozide (Orap); or
* an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), or selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam).
Some of these medications can cause serious or life-threatening drug interactions when taken together with fluvoxamine. You must wait at least 14 days after stopping an MAO inhibitor before you can take fluvoxamine. After you stop taking fluvoxamine, you must wait at least 14 days before you can start taking an MAOI.
Avoid drinking alcohol, which can increase some of the side effects of fluvoxamine. Cold or allergy medicine, narcotic pain medicine, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medicine for seizures, anxiety or depression can add to sleepiness caused by fluvoxamine. Tell your doctor if you regularly use any of these medicines. Fluvoxamine can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.
