In a double-blind clinical study of Glucophage - metformin in patients with type 2 diabetes, a total of 141 patients received Glucophage therapy (up to 2550 mg per day) and 145 patients received placebo. Adverse reactions reported in greater than 5% of the Glucophage patients, and that were more common in Glucophage, than placebo-treated patients.
Adverse reactions occured in trial:
* Diarrhea: 53.2 % of patients
* Nausea/Vomiting: 25.5 % of patients
* Flatulence: 12.1 % of patients
* Asthenia: 9.2 % of patients
* Indigestion: 7.1 % of patients
* Abdominal Discomfort: 6.4 % of patients
* Headache: 5.7 % of patients
Abdominal Side Effects
Some people taking Glucophage may experience heartburn and indigestion, upset stomach, nausea and vomiting as a side effect of the medication. None of these is cause for concern.
Digestive Side Effects
Diarrhea and intestinal gas are sometimes experienced by diabetes patients taking Glucophage. These side effects are normal and do not indicate a problem, but contact your doctor if they become bothersome.
