According to a study Norvasc - Amlodipine, was more effective at reducing blood pressure near the heart than standard, older treatments such as beta blockers. Norvasc, produced by drug company Pfizer was better in lowering central pressure than the atenolol-based conventional recommended treatment.
The study said Norvasc patients had 31% fewer major cardiovascular events, which include heart attacks, strokes and hospitalizations for heart-related problems or death. The study examined patients with coronary artery disease - people whose arteries were clogged to cholesterol rich fatty deposits called plaque.
The researchers also say that the results indicate that blood pressure near the heart, or central aortic blood pressure, may be a better predictor of heart attack and stroke risk than a traditional blood pressure measurement taken from the arm using the standard inflated arm cuff.
Norvasc's ability to reduce blood pressure and chest pains associated with heart disease may contribute to the overall reduction in cardiovascular events in patients with coronary artery disease. Norvasc may also slow plaque progression in arteries, which may further contribute to improved clinical outcomes.
