The goals of treatment are to: increase the strength of the joints; maintain or improve joint movement; reduce the disabling affects of the disease; relieve pain. The treatment depends on which joints are involved.
The most common medications used to treat osteoarthritis are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). They are pain relievers that reduce pain and swelling. Types include aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil), celecoxib (Celebrex), diclofenac (Voltaren), meloxicam (Movatec), naproxen (Naprosyn) and ketoprofen (Oruvail). Ketoprofen is considered more powerful than many other NSAIDs.
Title: Oruvail in the treatment of Nigerians with osteoarthritis
Author(s): Adelowo, O.O.; Omotoso, A.B.
An open, non-comprative study was carried out in 144 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, spine, hip and shoulder to determine the efficacy and tolerence with "oruvail", a controlled-release pellet-formulation of ketoprofen. The results of the subjects and objective assessments before and during 6 weeks treatment showed improvement in all parameters. The trial also showed that oruvail is well tolerated, producing minimal side effects. We conclude that oruvail is a useful addition to the therapeutic armamentarium against osteoarthritis in Nigerians.
