Reductil contains the active ingredient sibutramine hydrochloride. Sibutramine hydrochloride belongs to a group of medicines called serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors. Reductil is used to treat very overweight (obese) patients who have not been able to lose weight using a low calorie diet and exercise. Your ideal weight may not be achieved even with Reductil.
Reductil is a medicine used to help you lose and maintain weight loss. It works by making you feel satisfied with less food. It helps control how much you eat. You should still get hungry but feel full with less food than before. By eating less, it should be easier for you to lose weight - even if you haven't been able to before.
The recommended starting dose of Reductil is one 10 mg capsule administered once daily with or without food. If there is inadequate weight loss (ie less than 2 kg) after 4 weeks, the dose may be increased to one 15 mg capsule once daily provided 10 mg was well tolerated. Blood pressure and heart rate changes should be taken into account when deciding to increase the dose. Doses above 15 mg daily are not recommended. In most of the clinical trials, Reductil was given in the morning.
The recommended dosages of Reductil help to increase levels of two specific neurotransmitters in the brain. These two neurotransmitters – serotonin and noradrenalin act in the hypothalamus part of brain and are mainly responsible for transmitting messages in the between nerve cells. Regular dosages of Reductil lead to increase in the levels of these neurotransmitters, which in turn lead to suppression of appetite among people. Eventually the medication helps patients lose weight.
