Using Champix is really quite easy - the tough part is sticking to the treatment. Quitting smoking is not an easy task and you will require all the help and support you can get. Even with Champix you will face lots of problems in kicking off the habit because nicotine is the world's most addictive substance. Before you start using Champix, get the support of your friends, family and work colleagues to support you with your treatment.
Once you are sure of their support, set a date from when you will quit. About a week before this date, get started on Champix. It is advisable to set this date with the help of a medical practitioner. You will be smoking for about a week while you are taking Champix; the reason for this is that Champix requires some time to get into your system and start working.
Once you are on it, the treatment lasts for 12 weeks and during this time you will be taking one or two pills everyday. Champix comes in two doses of 0.5 mg and 1 mg. You will normally start on the 0.5 mg pill and take it for the first three days. Thereafter you will take two 0.5 mg pills for the next four days. This will round up the first week of your treatment after which you will be switched to the 1 mg pill once a day for the remaining 11 weeks.
Most likely you will be prescribed a starter pack of Champix which contains enough of each dose for one month. This will then be followed with a two months pack to complete the course. While Champix has been found to work very effectively during the 12 week treatment and most people are rid of the habit during this period, you can take Champix for another 12 weeks to improve your chances of coming clean from the habit. However this decision should be taken in consultation with your doctor.
