The active ingredient in Testosterone gel (also known as AndroGel) is testosterone. It is the same type of testosterone that is produced in the body. Testosterone is a naturally occurring male hormone and it is necessary for many processes in the body. It is a hormone replacement product for men that are suffering from hypogonadism, a low level of the male hormone testosterone. The medication is a gel that is applied to the skin once daily.
The recommended starting dose of Testosterone gel is 5 g once daily to clean, dry, intact skin of the shoulders and upper arms and/or abdomen (area of application should be limited to the area that will be covered by the patient's short sleeve t-shirt). Testosterone gel must not be applied to the genitals. Avoid fire, flames or smoking until the gel has dried since alcohol based products, including Testosterone gel, are flammable.
Testosterone gel is supplied in individual packets. Apply testosterone gel at the same time each day, preferably in the morning. Make sure to wash your hands after applying the gel. Give it a few minutes to dry before you dress. Make sure to wait at least five or six hours before showering or swimming.
The entire contents should be squeezed into the palm of the hand and immediately applied to the application sites. Alternately, patients may squeeze a portion of the gel from the packet into the palm of the hand and apply to application sites. Repeat until entire contents have been applied.
