Valtrex - Valaciclovir is used to treat cold sores (herpes labialis), shingles (herpes zoster). It is also used to treat genital herpes in patients with a normal immune system. Valaciclovir can also be used to control genital herpes outbreaks in all patients including those with HIV.
In a clinical study for the reduction of transmission of genital herpes, the adverse events reported by patients receiving Valrex 500 mg once daily (n = 743) included headache - 29%, nasopharyngitis - 16% and upper respiratory tract infection - 9%.
In clinical studies for the treatment of cold sores, the adverse events reported by patients receiving Valtrex (n = 609) included headache - 14% and dizziness - 2%.
Suppression of Genital Herpes in HIV-Infected Patients: In HIV-infected patients, frequently reported adverse events for Valtrex (500 mg twice daily; n = 194, median days on therapy = 172) included headache - 13%, fatigue - 8% and rash - 8%.
You may experience some or none of the Valtrex side effects listed in this article. Unfortunately, there is no way for your healthcare provider to know beforehand if you will have side effects from a medicine that you have never tried. Therefore, let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects while taking the drug or if you develop something that "just does not seem right." While it may not be a side effect of Valtrex, your healthcare provider can diagnose and treat the problem.
